Fall Football Flatbreads
Football season is here, and you know what that means. The weekends are filled with football, friends, family and of course, FOOD!
Now, I'm all for a good plate of wings, some nachos, or a bowl of chili, but sometimes it's fun to change things up a little. And one of my favorite ways to do that is with flatbreads.
They're easy to make, you can get creative with the toppings, and they're perfect for sharing. Plus, you don't have to spend the entire game in the kitchen. The key here is in the prep! Get your ingredients prepped, assemble your flatbreads, and let the oven do the work so you don’t miss a thing.
And since we're right in the middle of fall, why not bring some seasonal flavors into the mix?
Here are three flatbread combinations that deserve a spot on your game day menu.
BBQ Chicken & Caramelized Onion Flatbread
Let's start with a crowd favorite. There's something about smoky BBQ sauce, tender chicken, melted cheese, and sweet caramelized onions that just works.
What You'll Need:
1 prepared flatbread or naan
½ cup cooked, shredded chicken
¼ cup BBQ sauce
½ cup shredded mozzarella
¼ cup caramelized onions
2 tablespoons sliced red onion
Fresh cilantro, optional
Let's Get Cooking!
Preheat your oven to 425°F. Spread the BBQ sauce over your flatbread, leaving a little room around the edges. Add the chicken, mozzarella, caramelized onions, and sliced red onion.
Bake for 8–12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the edges are golden and crisp. Finish with fresh cilantro if you like.
Chef KDJ Tip: Toss your shredded chicken with a little BBQ sauce before adding it to the flatbread. It helps keep the chicken moist and adds flavor to every bite.
Roasted Butternut Squash, Sage & Goat Cheese Flatbread
Now we're bringing fall to the football party!
Butternut squash is one of those ingredients that doesn't always get the attention it deserves. Roast it until it's tender and slightly caramelized, pair it with creamy goat cheese and fresh sage, and you've got something special.
What You'll Need:
1 prepared flatbread or naan
½ cup roasted butternut squash, diced
¼ cup crumbled goat cheese
¼ cup shredded mozzarella
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon chopped fresh sage
1 tablespoon chopped toasted walnuts, optional
A drizzle of honey
Salt and pepper to taste
Let's Get Cooking!
Preheat your oven to 425°F. Brush the flatbread lightly with olive oil. Add the roasted butternut squash, mozzarella, goat cheese, and sage.
Bake for 8–12 minutes, until the cheese melts and the edges crisp up. Remove from the oven and finish with toasted walnuts and a light drizzle of honey.
Chef KDJ Tip: Roast your squash ahead of time. A little olive oil, salt, pepper, and a hot oven will bring out its natural sweetness. And don't skip the fresh sage. It really brings those fall flavors together.
Buffalo Chicken & Blue Cheese Flatbread
You can't talk football food without bringing a little heat to the party!
This one has all the flavors of Buffalo wings without the pile of bones and messy fingers. Well, maybe a few messy fingers. It IS football season!
What You'll Need:
1 prepared flatbread or naan
½ cup cooked, shredded chicken
3 tablespoons Buffalo sauce
½ cup shredded mozzarella
2 tablespoons crumbled blue cheese
2 tablespoons thinly sliced celery
1 tablespoon sliced green onions
Ranch or blue cheese dressing for drizzling
Let's Get Cooking!
Preheat your oven to 425°F. Toss the shredded chicken with Buffalo sauce. Spread it evenly over your flatbread and top with mozzarella and blue cheese.
Bake for 8–12 minutes until hot and bubbly. Finish with sliced celery, green onions, and a drizzle of your favorite dressing.
Chef KDJ Tip: Don't add the celery before baking. Keep it fresh and crunchy for a little texture that balances out the heat.
A Few Game Day Flatbread Tips
The great thing about flatbreads is that you don't have to make everything from scratch. Store-bought naan, pita, or prepared flatbread crusts work beautifully. And if you've got homemade pizza dough, even better!
One of the biggest mistakes people make is piling on too many toppings. I know it's tempting, but too much sauce or too many ingredients can leave you with a soggy crust.
Keep your toppings balanced, make sure any raw meats are fully cooked before assembling, and remember that you're looking for a crispy base with just enough toppings to bring everything together.
Great Football Deserves Great Food
Here's the thing about game day food. It doesn't need to be fancy or complicated. It just needs to taste good and bring people together.
Make a few varieties, slice them into smaller pieces, put them out on a big board, and let everyone dig in.
And if you're wondering who I'm cheering for this football season, you already know!
GO LIONS!
Now, let's hope the game is as good as the food!
